Swords clash, trumpets sound and cannons roar: on Saturday 18 and Sunday 19 July 2026, Montfort Castle returns to the age of knights, maidens and battles during the largest medieval spectacle in the southern Netherlands. The tenth edition of Middeleeuws Montfort is not only bigger, but also more varied than ever before! And that makes it a fantastic day out for young and old.
Knight tournaments and battles
Let yourself be transported back to the Middle Ages and experience a weekend full of action. Meet more than 400 medieval characters in authentic clothing, enjoy atmospheric musical performances, craft demonstrations and a heroic knight tournament on horseback. Spectacular highlight: an impressive battle with dozens of knights and real cannons – as if you were standing right in the middle of the battlefield.
Adventure for young knights and maidens
There is plenty for children to experience. For example, they can battle real knights during the legendary kiddy battle, take part in a historical games course or create their own family coat of arms. There will also be fun performances for them. The knight school of weapons master Baroen – a must for young heroes – will also return, as will the pony course where young knights and maidens can test their riding skills.
Stocks, executioner and craftsmen
Do you dare to stand in the stocks? Executioner Jan de Goede provides entertainment with a wink, while castle guides tell you all about the centuries-old history of Montfort Castle. Around the castle, craftsmen demonstrate their age-old crafts: from calligraphy to making chainmail. And delicious vlaaien are baked in a wood-fired oven.
Camps, market and music
Explore the extensive camps of dozens of medieval groups and browse the large medieval market full of unique goods. Relax on the cosy castle terrace or in the atmospheric wine cellar, and enjoy live music by troubadours and cheerful acts by performers.
Largest festival in the southern Netherlands
Middeleeuws Montfort has existed since 1998 and in recent years has grown into the largest medieval festival in the southern Netherlands. You are warmly invited to enjoy a historical day out on and around the imposing Montfort Castle, which dates from the thirteenth century. This is possible on both 18 and 19 July from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on and around Montfort Castle, Huysdijk 4, Montfort (near Roermond). Free parking is available in our car park; follow the signs.
