The Netherlands American Cemetery, the only American military cemetery in the Netherlands, is the final resting place of more than 8,000 American soldiers. In addition, 1,722 missing service members are commemorated on the Walls of the Missing. Most of those buried or commemorated here lost their lives during the liberation of Southeast Netherlands and the advance into Germany during the Second World War.
The cemetery is visible from far away thanks to its 30-metre-high tower. The cemetery grounds have been granted to the Government of the United States of America in perpetual use.
The American Battle Monuments Commission manages the American Cemetery in Margraten. The Commission is responsible for 26 military cemeteries worldwide. Its dedicated staff ensure that the cemetery is impeccably maintained every day and that the legacy of those who gave their lives continues to be honoured.
All activities and services at the American Cemetery in Margraten are offered free of charge by professional guides. Guided tours can be reserved for groups of ten or more, or you can join an open guided tour. These take place every Saturday and Sunday at 11:00 a.m. and, during holiday periods, often on weekdays as well. The meeting point for the open guided tour is at the steps in front of the visitor centre.
It is recommended that you visit the visitor centre first. Here you will find self-guided tours, as well as an activity booklet for children and families. Check the activity calendar or contact the cemetery for more information.
