Beschermd stads- en dorpsgezicht Treebeek

Brunssum has one of the largest protected city and village views in the Netherlands. The old mining colonies (neighbourhoods), the Schutterspark and the Vijverpark are part of this. A wonderful example can be seen in Treebeek. The old colony has been completely renovated. Both the old miners' houses and the public space have been restored. The Treebeekplein - once designed in a park-like atmosphere - has slowly crumbled over the years.

Originally, Treebeekplein had a sunken location in relation to the houses. These houses were demolished in the 1970s and apartments were built in their place. These proved not to be 'time-resistant' and were difficult to rent out after two decades. That is why the housing association (Wonen Zuid) together with the municipality of Brunssum are restoring the square to its former glory, so that it connects seamlessly with the protected cityscape and village view of Treebeek.
