De Gau

The presence of the Gau, a natural water source, played an important role in the creation of Vaals. A wetland area is an attractive location for business; This is indicated by the remains of habitation in this area. For example, during the redevelopment of Koningin Julianaplein, drainage systems were discovered and also a gutter, covered with wood and natural stone, presumably an old-fashioned sewerage system.

It is known from historical sources that there were extensive gardens around the Von Clermont House with fountains that also required water. Water was also used in the cloth factory. The Gau still flows underground through the area, but is no longer visible.
