De meanderende Geul

De Geul is an idyllic stream that meanders considerably, or meanders through the landscape. Because the Geul flows fast on this part, the water in the outer bends wears away the bank. In the inner bends the water flows less quickly and the sand and mud that have been carried away remain there. For example, there is a steep bank in the outer bends and a flat bank in the inner bends.

The bends become sharper and sharper due to the constant force of the flowing water. This can go as far as the curvy loops touching. Then the water chooses the shortest path again and the unused loop silts up again. In this way the flow of the Geul shifts through the landscape. The natural course of the Geul provides a nice picture.
