Kasteelruïne & Fluweelengrot

Kasteelruïne & Fluweelengrot

The Fluweelengrot is one of the oldest underground tunnel systems in South Limburg. Join a guided tour and immerse yourself in the stories of the block breakers, hidden shelters, paintings, and sculptures.

At the Castle Ruin, you step back into the age of knights and damsels. Wander at your own pace through the knights’ hall, the armoury, and the chapel of the Netherlands’ only hilltop castle, which has stood as the beacon of Valkenburg aan de Geul since 1050.

Countless battles were fought here, until the castle was blown up in 1672 by order of Stadtholder William III.
