MergelRijk has been voted the most fun cave in Limburg!
With an audio tour (available in nine languages), you'll experience everything there is to know about caves and marl: from 70 million years ago in the brand-new Mosaquarium to surprisingly photogenic 3D cave paintings.
What can you expect during a visit to MergelRijk?
After purchasing or scanning your ticket at the entrance, you're ready to enter the cave! Activate your audio tour and enjoy a fun guided experience through the cave with Jan, an experienced cave guide.
Once the light in the waiting area turns green, you can proceed to the next room: the cinema. Here, Peter, the founder of MergelRijk, will welcome you. Then, the magical Sand Artist (famous from television) will take you on a journey through the origin of marl and the caves with his unique sand drawings.
Now you're all set to begin your adventure through the underground quarry! The tour starts by taking you millions of years back in time to when marl first began to form. You'll walk across the seabed of the ancient Cretaceous sea, where you'll encounter the mighty Mosasaurus.
After stepping out of the sea, your journey continues as you discover all the stories about marl and the caves. These are beautifully illustrated along the way with marl sculptures, sand art, portraits, and informative videos. Topics include fossils, building with marl, sheltering in caves, flint, cave mushrooms, and bats.
At the cave workshop, you’ll even get to try working with marl yourself! Carve your own little marl block and take home a unique souvenir.
You'll also enter the dark, abandoned section of the quarry, which still looks exactly as Thomas Didden left it in 1706, complete with his name on the wall. If you dare, you can even leave your own name on the wall too!
After learning everything about the caves and marl, your underground adventure ends with a final highlight: the 3D cave painting room. Here, you can enjoy unique 3D artworks and take surprisingly fun photos!
And for kids?
There’s even more to do and discover along the way! Kids get a fun scavenger hunt, can search for fossils, create their own sand art, and come face to face with dinosaurs in DinoRijk. (Which, by the way, is just as much fun for adults!)
