Schootsvelden Sittard

In the Middle Ages, the field of fire was located around the ramparts of the fortified city of Sittard: an open space that the artillery used in case of imminent attacks and to have a clear view around the city. Therefore, no buildings were allowed in this area. After the destruction of Sittard in 1677, allotments were laid out in the firing fields. Later, the area was partly built on.

Most of the buildings have since been demolished in order to partially restore the historic situation. The firing fields now form a park-like edge around the city centre. From here (Odasingel) you have a beautiful view over the city wall and the historic city center with its beautiful churches, monasteries and monumental buildings.
