Wilhelminaplein Vaals

This stately square was named in 1898 after the then Queen Wilhelmina. That name was changed to Maastrichterlaan by the Germans during the Second World War. The original name was formally reinstated in 2013. The town hall of Vaals was once located here. During the war, it was also the location where the Vaalser Jews were deported.

That is why this is the start and end location of a so-called 'Joods Vaals' circular walk that takes you past the various points of Jewish history in Vaals. This walk goes back to the early 18th century. After the invasion of the German troops on May 10, 1940, the reprisals against the Jews started a few weeks later. The deportations took place in the years 1942 and 1943. More information about this can be found on the information board on the square.
