For centuries, castrati were the superstars of the European music world. Their voices were celebrated for their unparalleled power, flexibility and expressiveness, yet today their existence also raises questions about the body, art and ethics.
What made the castrato voice so extraordinary? And how is it viewed today? On Thursday 23 July, Marie-José van den Beuken takes you on a fascinating journey through the history and unique sound world of the castrato voice.
Drawing on her extensive experience as a performing singer and teacher, she explores both the musical and the human side of this remarkable phenomenon. Marie-José enjoyed a long career as a singer, specialising in oratorio and Baroque music.
For many years, she also taught singing and vocal technique at the conservatories of Enschede and Maastricht. Today, she happily lives at Parc Imstenrade. A fascinating lecture for anyone with an interest in music history, singing and culture!
