Philzuid presenteert: Componistendag Wenen 1900

Theater aan het Vrijthof, Vrijthof 47,
Maastricht
This year's Composers' Day is dedicated to "Vienna 1900." Philzuid and Chief Conductor Duncan Ward explore the rich musical history of Vienna.

The special guest is none other than Dame Sarah Connolly, who was appointed Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 2017 for her outstanding services to music.

Connolly has a particular affinity for the sensitive sound world of the Mahler family, including Gustav Mahler's Rückert-Lieder. Inspired by the lyrical poetry of the German poet Friedrich Rückert, Mahler composed this richly expressive song cycle.

Connolly will also perform a selection of songs by Alma Mahler. In addition, a string sextet will perform works by Schönberg and Fuchs. The day concludes with Die Seejungfrau by Alexander von Zemlinsky. An intriguing detail is that he composed this work after losing the love of his life, Alma Mahler, to Gustav Mahler.
