Philzuid pays tribute to Finnish and French composers who found inspiration in the beauty of nature—especially the winter landscape—and created music of breathtaking beauty.

Special attention is given to the Finnish composer Einojuhani Rautavaara, who passed away ten years ago. Together with Kaija Saariaho, Rautavaara is regarded as the most influential Finnish composer since Sibelius.

One of his best-known works is the orchestral piece Cantus Arcticus, in which he evokes the splendour of the Finnish landscape through recordings of birdsong. Rautavaara's atmospheric Violin Concerto, in turn, is a true tour de force for violin soloist Tobias Feldmann.

The programme also features La Mer by Debussy, a musical tribute to the sea, as well as Les Eaux célestes by the young composer Pépin.
