Twenty-four media artworks about demonstrations and political actions in public spaces provide a multifaceted picture of how video and media artists work with the visual language, structures, symbolism and impact of different types of demonstrations and political actions in the public domain.
Twenty video and media artists from seventeen countries and five continents each address, in their own way, the layered relationship between online media, media art and contemporary visual culture with the ubiquitous camera.
PROTEST is about (from a bird's eye view) the power of the camera and the control over the image. The media artists, online image researchers and filmmakers in PROTEST study this relationship from two different positions: from behind the camera or the screen (“look at this”) or in front of the camera (“look at me”).
