Reinoud de Strijdvaardige

Seven hundred years after his death, Count Reinald of Guelders returns to the place where his life came to a tragic end. On the evenings of Friday 11 and Saturday 12 September, the imposing ruins of Montfort Castle will provide the setting for Reinald the Valiant: a unique open-air performance that brings together Limburg’s history, theatre and magnificent music by composers including Mozart, Verdi, Puccini, Elgar and Wagner.

Master storyteller Sybrand van der Werf, soprano Fenna Ograjensek, baritone Vincent Kusters and the Koninklijke Fanfare De Vriendenkring Montfort, conducted by Philip Seerden, will tell the moving story of this ruler. He fought for power but lost the Duchy of Limburg, stood up for the vulnerable and was therefore branded insane, and was eventually imprisoned by his own son in the dungeon of Montfort Castle. Inspired by this historical figure, Fedor Coenen wrote a thought-provoking text that brings Reinald back to life and places his story in the present day.

Reinald the Valiant offers an unforgettable journey through history. With dozens of medieval re-enactors, spectacular clashes of weapons and the atmospheric illumination of the castle walls, his story can be heard and felt once again after seven hundred years. Complete your evening with a dinner among the vines in the castle garden before the performance.
