The exhibition ‘Staken & Straf: mijnwerkers in bezetting en bevrijding’ highlights two impactful periods during and shortly after the Second World War, when the mines were both places of resistance and retribution.
In the spring of 1943, people in the Netherlands went on strike en masse as an act of resistance during the April–May strikes. Miners also stopped working, with all the risks that entailed. After the liberation, the meaning of underground work changed once again.
In the Limburg mines, where labor was urgently needed, people who had collaborated with the occupiers during the war were put to work. Staken & Straf shows, through personal stories, documents, and objects, how war and labor profoundly shaped the lives of miners and their communities.
