Willy Looyen: The Form Presence Takes

In The Form Presence Takes, the focus is on people who speak out and stand up for human rights, human dignity and social responsibility. Courage also plays an important role in their stories.

Willy Looyen portrays female politicians, women who have shaped public debate and human rights defenders. Their faces are more than just images: they reflect their convictions and the significance of their contributions to society.

This idea is expressed through portraits created on recycled fabrics, built up in layers of screen printing, embroidery and textile elements. The combination of techniques and materials gives the artworks a layered character and reveals what lies behind a face.

Textiles are more than just a surface. They bear traces of use, vulnerability and time, bringing together different layers of meaning.
