Bevrijding van het Heuvelland Eijsden-Margraten

Bevrijding van het Heuvelland Eijsden-Margraten

June 6th 1944, D-Day. Operation Overlord, the much-anticipated landing of the Allies on the coast of Normandy, is well documented. In the Netherlands, the arrival of the liberators was also awaited with bated breath. Because of the approach from the south, American soldiers first set foot on Dutch soil in Eijsden-Margraten. This explains why there is still so much to see and discover here from this turbulent time. So much that you had better take your bike!

The Liberation of the Heuvelland Route is one of the three WWII cycle routes. (Liberation of the Maas Valley & Liberation of the Plateau). The central theme is Cycling to Freedom. On this route you will cycle along different war sites in Zuid-Limburg’s Heuvelland region. You will discover, amongst others, the Old Hickory Monument and the listening stone at the Mescherhei watchtower. The route largely follows the cycle junction network.
