Fietsroute - Diep in de subtropische Krijtzee

Fietsroute - Diep in de subtropische Krijtzee

On this cycle route around Mount St Pieter (Sint-Pietersberg) and the Belgian border town of Riemst, you will discover dizzying deep quarries, high hills and a lot of hidden cultural history. The soil of the quarries consists of limestone, once formed in the ancient Cretaceous Sea. Maastricht’s limestone appeared to be less suitable as a building material, but found its niche as a key ingredient in the massive cement industry. It Is fascinating how the limestone quarries have also served as an eagle-owl reserve, a hiding place for Rembrandt’s Night Watch, and impressive defence works. Start at the car park of St Pieter’s Fort (Luikerweg 71a, Maastricht).
