Fietsroute - Kalk, het gele goud

Fietsroute - Kalk, het gele goud

This cycle route winds straight through Zuid-Limburg’s limestone landscape. In the Maas Valley you cycle across the ancient Cretaceous sea-floor, that emerged to the surface, due to erosion by rivers and streams. On the steepest slopes of the valley, nature has remained untouched by time and is for you to enjoy now in one of the most beautiful forests in The Netherlands, the Savelsbos.

Thousands of years ago, the limestone soil here was already in demand for the extraction of flint. In the Savelsbos forest and on the Bemelerberg hill, witness a remarkable landscape with rare lime flora and dramatically rising limestone walls. Also, open-cast ‘’t Rooth’ has evolved into a highly biodiverse nature reserve. You can park and start at Bemelen’s community centre (Oude Akerstraat 52, Bemelen).
