Fancy cycling through the Zuid-Limburg hills? The Land of Marl Cycle Route (Mergellandroute) takes you to the most beautiful places. The entire route covers over 155 kilometres, but you can also opt for a shorter stretch. This Western Loop is perfect for a day trip and explores the rolling hills between the town of Valkenburg and the Maas village of Eijsden. Along the way you will discover the typical Zuid-Limburg landscape, with its marl caves, authentic square farms, road crosses and, of course, its beautiful panoramic views. Do not hesitate to stop at one of the numerous farm shops or small stalls along the road. After all, there is an abundance of fruit orchards in this area. In the Maas village of Eijsden, the atmosphere around the central square is almost French: cobblestones, white facades and painted shutters. But also, the cave dwellings in Geulhem, the ‘Fluweelengrot’ cave and the ruined castle make this route truly unique in The Netherlands.
The cycle junction system ensures that you can easily find your way. You can park and start at the car park of Eijsden railway station. Additionally, there is a map available at the Visit Zuid-Limburg Shops , showing the route and the best tourist attractions in the area. You can easily hire a bike or scooter at the ‘Cycle Center’ or at ‘Scooterverhuur Limburg’.
There is nothing as annoying as a lack of clear signposting on your route. Despite continuous checks, a lack may still exist. Report unclear, broken or missing signposts quickly and efficiently to Routepunt Zuid-Limburg. Of course, suggestions for improvements are also welcome. Together, we can keep all our recreational routes up-to-date and accessible!
